In this post, I want to share with you how your first (or next) book can generate at least $50,000—with little to no upfront investment. Yes, you heard that right. I’ve used this formula myself, and I’ve taught it to others who’ve seen incredible results. Let me show you how you can do the same.
Your Book is More Than Just a Book
Most people think of a book as something you write, publish, and sell. And while selling books is a great start, it’s only the beginning. Your book can be so much more than a product—it can be a business asset that opens doors to consulting, coaching, workshops, and more. The key is to shift your mindset and see your book as a tool to build authority and create multiple income streams.
Step 1: Write a Book the Market Wants
Here’s where many aspiring authors go wrong. They write a book they want to write, rather than one the market wants. If your goal is to generate income, you need to write a book that solves real problems for your audience. Here’s how I do it:
- Identify the Top Questions in Your Niche: What are the burning questions your audience is asking? Whether you’re a business professional, accountant, or life coach, there are specific challenges your audience faces. I use platforms like Quora, Google, and Facebook groups to find these questions.
- Structure Your Book Around These Questions: I aim for an 8-10 chapter book, with each chapter addressing a specific question or category. This makes the book highly practical and valuable to readers.
- Provide Unique Insights: I don’t just regurgitate information. I share my perspective, challenge existing ideas, and offer actionable solutions. This positions me as an authority in my field.
Step 2: Publish and Launch Strategically
Once your book is ready, it’s time to publish and launch it in a way that maximizes revenue. Here’s how I do it:
- Publish on Amazon: I start by publishing an eBook and a paperback version. Amazon offers “Author Copies” for as low as $2 per copy. I order 100 copies to kickstart my launch.
- Host a Book Launch Event: I invite 300 people (trust me, you know that many!). Not everyone will attend, but that’s okay. At the event, I sell signed copies of my book at a premium price. For example, if my book normally sells for $20, I charge 20, and then I charge $50 for a signed, limited-edition copy with a certificate of ownership. This creates exclusivity and value.
- Sell 100 Signed Copies: If I sell 100 signed copies at 50 each, I would’ve already made $5,000. This is my first income stream.
Step 3: Leverage Your Book for Consulting and Workshops
Your book isn’t just a product—it’s a gateway to higher-ticket opportunities. Here’s how I turn my book into a consulting or coaching business:
- Send Copies to Influencers and Companies: After my launch, I send 100 copies to key individuals and companies in my industry. I include a handwritten note expressing my admiration for their work and offering a complimentary session or workshop for their team.
- Follow Up: Within a week, I follow up with these recipients. If my book addresses a pressing problem, at least 20% will respond. This opens the door to consulting gigs, workshops, or coaching opportunities.
- Charge Premium Rates: A one- or two-day workshop can easily net me $5,000. If 10 companies hire me, that’s $50,000 in revenue—all thanks to the authority my book has established.
Step 4: Expand Your Reach with Virtual Offerings
In today’s digital age, you don’t need to limit yourself to in-person events. Virtual workshops and coaching sessions can be just as profitable. If your book addresses a personal or non-business topic, you can still find 100 people willing to pay $500 each for your expertise. That’s another $50,000 in potential income.
The $50K Authority Formula
Let me be clear: the real money isn’t in book sales—it’s in the opportunities your book creates. By positioning yourself as an authority, you unlock consulting, coaching, and speaking opportunities that far exceed the revenue from book sales alone.

You make it sound so easy, but it is hard work to sit down and write a good book. But nowadays at least anybody can publish a book with minimal cost involved and thanks to the internet, reach so many more customers than ever before.
I love your idea of having a book launch, but would you not have to have them printed out for this, or could you still sell digital versions with your signature?
I am going to check out your free master class to get some more tips and hopefully get inspired to writing my own book.
Thanks Michel.
Doing a book launch will require you to print out some copies. You can have copies of your own book printed for as little as $2 per copy. So to print 100 copies, you’ll need to invest $200. As I mentioned in the article, you could sell personally signed copies for $30-$50. Even if you sold 10 Copies at $30, you would have recovered the cost of printing and still be able to bring an additional 50 copies. You’d then be able to do you Executive Outreach with 140 copies of your book in hand.
The idea of leveraging a single book to create multiple income streams is both fascinating and practical! This approach shifts the mindset from viewing a book as just a product to seeing it as a foundation for a broader business strategy.
What’s particularly intriguing is the concept of repurposing content into various formats—such as courses, coaching programs, or speaking engagements. It makes so much sense to maximize the value of the content already created rather than just relying on book sales alone.
I also appreciate how this article highlights the long-term potential of publishing. Instead of focusing solely on initial sales, building an ecosystem around the book ensures ongoing revenue and audience engagement. It’s a powerful way for authors to establish authority and create lasting financial benefits.
Thank you, Laura.
This is a fascinating approach to book publishing! The idea of leveraging a book as a gateway to consulting and workshops makes a lot of sense. I’m curious—what do you think is the biggest challenge for first-time authors trying to implement this strategy? Is it finding the right niche, marketing effectively, or something else? Would love to hear thoughts from those who’ve tried a similar approach! I started writing a book not too long ago, so this was timely for me by the way!
Zac, I think the biggest challenge to first timers, is confidently identifying their target industry’s pain point. and this finding the specific companies that are experiencing those pain points. These are things we will cover in the masterclass.
This breakdown of turning a book into multiple income streams is really eye-opening. It’s a smart shift from just selling books to using them as leverage for bigger opportunities like consulting and workshops. The idea of writing a book based on market demand instead of just personal passion makes a lot of sense for profitability.
Has anyone here successfully used their book to land speaking gigs or business deals? I’d love to hear how it worked out for you!
Hey Jacob,
This book – Sell Yourself Right launched me as a career coach and Job readiness expert, and brought in over over $120,000 in new business over 4 years – 2013 – 2018. That may not be much for you, but for a developing country like Liberia where I live, it’s HUGE.
And this one – 5G, AI and the Future of Business in Africa got me hired in 2023 by a marine contracting company to help them leveraging AI in their business development efforts. Last year, leveraging AI, we secured a $1.39 M contract. My fee? $60K.
This was an eye-opening read! As a writer, I especially appreciate the breakdown of the $50K Authority Formula—it’s a game-changer for those looking to turn their book into more than just a one-time sale. The idea of leveraging a book for consulting and workshops really shifts the perspective on publishing. This approach makes so much sense in today’s digital age. Thanks for sharing these actionable steps!
Always my pleasure, Philip.
The idea of treating a book as a business asset rather than just a product is a powerful shift in mindset. This approach—writing for market demand, launching strategically, and leveraging the book for consulting—offers significant income potential.
However, for new authors, building credibility first may be crucial. Would strategies like guest blogging, podcasting, or free workshops help establish authority before the book launch? Additionally, the outreach strategy for sending books to influencers could be refined—how can authors identify the right contacts and maximize responses? Addressing these points could make the $50K formula even more effective.
Hey Vlad, thanks for sharing your thoughts. In the approach I teach, writing the book IS CREDIBILITY BUILDING. You’re building credibility with decision makers in your industry by sending them YOUR book that show them how to address a pain point their faced with. For the outreach, it’s pretty simple:
1. Make of list of your target 100 companies – ones who actually suffer from the pain points you’ve identified in your industry
2. identify the heads of those companies (you can use google search, LinkedIn, or a gazillion other means for that)
3. Mail a copy to each executive on that list with a hand written note on an index card. (This is the difference maker)
4. Wait to be invited for a meeting or an interview. If you’ve done this right, YOU WILL be contacted.
This approach really only works for those looking to land business / institutional clients
Great article. The basic step by step breakdown of the $50k plan makes this easy to understand and a realistic formula to success.
I have published a book before but was never very successful. As you mentioned from the start however, my book was about a topic I wanted and never really sold. Additionally, I thought the main income was from the book itself, I never thought of the stream of income of consulting, workshops, and virtual offerings.
Overall, this sounds like a plan that anyone looking to building a lucrative income could follow and succeed at.
Really glad this makes sense to you, Chris. The key is find out what book the market (your niche/ industry) wants based on the pain point it has, and then write THAT book. And now with AI, finding those pain points have never been easier.
Hi admin,
This article is a goldmine for anyone considering writing a book! I really appreciate how you’ve shifted the mindset from seeing a book just as a product to seeing it as a tool for building authority and creating income streams. The idea of leveraging a book for consulting and workshops is a game-changer. It’s incredible to think about how your book can open doors to high-ticket opportunities beyond just book sales.
I also love how you emphasize the importance of writing a book the market wants rather than just writing what you’re passionate about. It makes so much sense to identify the burning questions in your niche and structure your book around them.
What’s your take on finding the right balance between writing a book for the market and staying true to your personal passion? How do you avoid compromising on your voice while still creating a book that answers your audience’s needs?
Looking forward to hearing more from you on this—thanks for the insightful advice!
Best,
Courtney
Thank you, Courtney!
This post really opened my eyes to the potential of turning a book into a full-fledged business! I love the idea of using a book to build authority and unlock consulting or coaching opportunities. It makes so much sense to view a book as a marketing asset rather than just a product. Has anyone here tried leveraging their book for workshops or speaking gigs? I’m curious how others have expanded their reach beyond book sales. This $50K formula feels like a game-changer!
This has been my go-to strategy, Theirry. When it comes to the formula, there are two ways to leverage it – in getting a new higher level job, or connecting with Enterprise clients so as to grow their businesses.
Which of these 2 categories do you identify with?
